Guesthouse Taverna Kupljen

If you set off to explore the hills of Jeruzalem, make sure you visit the Taverna restaurant and experience its unique atmosphere. The delicious local cuisine and high-quality Kupljen wines will most certainly make your visit worth a while and make you want to come again. Should you wish to stay overnight, we have rooms and apartments available.

History
Taverna opened its doors in 1898. It is located in the village of Veličane, perched up on the altitude of 313m, and lies on the wine trail half way between the town of Jeruzalem and the Svetinje parish. The centre of Taverna is the restaurant, which has been built on the historic 270-year old arched cellar preserved from the winemaking building that used to stand there in olden times. A 67m-deep well has also been preserved from those days, and it is still used today to provide Taverna with drinking water. Another reminder of the site's rich history is the 200-year old linden tree, which is depicted on a map from the times of the Austrian empress Maria Teresa, when it probably served as a military landmark.

Taverna offers spectacular vistas – under clear skies you can gaze toward northern Croatia, lower Austria, western Hungary, the Pohorje hills and the Panonian lowlands.

Restaurant
The entire Taverna is pervaded by the air of the times past. The furnishings (tables, seats, chairs, the bar) are made of reused old crushers and barrels, while the walls are decorated with antiques, such as the two amphorae brought to Taverna in the course of a wine brotherhood. Taverna can welcome 70 guests at a time if there is no live music and 55 guests when there is a band playing, while on warm summer evenings and when the weather is nice, the garden, which seats an additional 50 people, is also available.

Gallery
Overlooking Taverna's central restaurant area is the gallery, which offers an entirely new perspective – not only of the main room below but overhead as well, where the ceiling beams support a host of antiquities: a historic sewing machine, a chest, a carriage. The tables on the gallery sit 25 guests.
